Dear gps4cam friends,

What a pleasure for me to announce that the Android version of gps4cam is now available on the Android Market .

gps4cam for Android will remain a beta version for a few weeks, just the time for it to be tested on more Android phones and just the time for me to implement the trip display on the map (for those who do no know gps4cam on iPhone, the feature I am talking about is not a key feature for the geotagging process). Of course, if you buy gps4cam beta, you will not have to pay again when the beta will be ended. gps4cam beta will evolve to gps4cam through free updates that will be available on the Android Market.

You will find below a direct access to the gps4cam apk that you can install for free on your device. If you did not buy gps4cam on the Android market, the license check will fail but you will be able to test that the application runs correctly on your device and buy it afterwards if everything is fine. If you encounter a problem while running the app on your device, please mail me at michael.diguet@gps4cam.com.

Here is a link to gps4cam for Android 6.1.1 beta 2.
Here is a link to gps4cam for Android 6.1.1 beta 3.
Here is a link to gps4cam for Android 6.1.2.

I would be really thankful to receive your feedbacks at michael.diguet@gps4cam.com.
I wish you some beautiful photos with gps4cam .

Warmest Regards, Michael

This option can be used if most of your photo has been photographed while gps4cam is running (in order to avoid a too much time consuming search) and if QRCodes of one trip has been photographed before the next trip begin. This was the default option for every gps4cam desktop version before 4.0. If wrongly used, this method could cause the error number 3 of the list of the 4 most submitted errors.

✔ The geotagging step is two times faster.

✔ GPX files corresponding to decoded trips are generated (in the case photos are not geotagged in their origin directory).

✔ The error management has been improved, it is now really easy to find photos that have not been geotagged for one reason or another, they are put in some dedicated directories .Une gestion d’erreur améliorée, il est dorénavant très facile de retrouver les photos qui n’ont pas été géolocalisées pour une raison ou pour une autre, elles sont placées dans des répertoires appropriés (in the case they are not geotagged in their origin directory).

✔ It is now possible to set preferences so photos are geotagged directly in their origin directory. It was already possible in preceding versions by specifying the same input and output directory, but the new method only needs one directory to be specified and avoid the warning that bothered experimented users.

Once these new possibilities considered, the usage of desktop gps4cam 4.x is similar to the one of previous versions.

These new features have been suggested by users gps4cam (for the most part of them), I take this opportunity to thank them warmly. I also thank all gps4cam users, you can be sure that your encouragements go straight to my heart and help me to improve my application again and again.

Dear gps4cam users,

Here are the four most common mistakes submitted to the gps4cam support team. By knowing them and by reading the FAQ, you are ensured to have an optimal usage of gps4cam.

n°1 : The screenshot instead of the photo.
You have to photograph the generated QRCode(s) with the same camera you used during your trip. This is mandatory to automatically take into account the potential time shift between the camera time and the iPhone time. Please note that gps4cam cannot work with a screenshot of the QRCode.

n°2 : The trip that generates several QRCodes.
If the trip is long, several QRCodes may be generated during the export. In this case, you have to photograph every QRCodes. The number of dots under the QRCode allows to know the number of generated QRCodes. You can switch from one QRCode to another one by sliding your finger on the iPhone screen.

n°3 : Several trips in a same vacation.
Before gps4cam desktop V4.0:
It is possible to make several trips in a vacation and to use gps4cam desktop at the end of vacations. However, there is an important rule to respect in this case: always export and photograph the QRCode of a finished trip before starting a new one. If you try to export all your trips at the end of your vacations, it will be problematic since gps4cam does not look for QRCodes in photos which are in the timeframe of an already decoded trip (for performances reasons). If this rule was not followed, it is possible to make gps4cam desktop works fine, but you have to create one folder by trip and put photos of the trip and qrcodes of the trip inside.
After gps4cam desktop V4.0:
gps4cam desktop 4.0 offers three QRCodes search methods, that is why the preceding rule is not mandatory anymore. You can photograph all QRCodes of all your trips at the end and choose the corresponding method in gps4cam desktop preferences, or you can even manually select pictures where QRCodes are.

n°4: Camera time change during the trip.
A big advantage of gps4cam is that it is able to automatically manage the time shift between the iPhone time and the camera time without anything to do for the user. So please do nothing . You must not change the camera time between the beginning of the trip and the moment you photograph QRCodes after export.

Good things come in small packages.

The little gps4cam application for Apple iPhone and iPad is one of those small packages that are simply terrific.

Top 6 Reasons to Get it:

By far the least expensive way to geo-tag your photographs

Works with any and all digital cameras. Any model, any make (even Leica!).

Runs in the background. Feel free to listen to music, use maps, browse the web, make phone calls, play games, use other apps.

No need to “synchronize your watches”. It will figure out for you, exactly when and where each photograph was taken

WiFi not required. Works anywhere on planet Earth. Does not require a new device to keep charged and track of.

It uses the iPhone already in your pocket.

Recently we uploaded a new version of gps4cam desktop. This update is recommended to all users of gps4cam!
The most important improvement is that it geotags your pictures twice as fast as the previous versions.
For the users of gps4cam with an older Mac OS there’s great news as well: this version works without any problem on Mac OSX 10.4
Last but not least: there’s a new option in the preferences that allows you to use the creation and modification data from the EXIF file. This option solves a problem some users had with uploading their pictures to Flickr.

Keep giving feedback so we can keep on improving gps4cam!

To download gps4cam desktop, please visit the download section on the website.

Chris Bennett wrote a very complete and interesting app review on his blog:

I went to Hartsholme on Sunday for 2 reasons, the main reason to photograph the wildlife – something I really enjoy and secondly to try out some new software that I purchased for my iPhone.

One thing that I miss from my Nikon days was not being able to geotag my photos. Nikon have a device that works with most of their SLR’s called the Nikon GP-1 GPS Module: this uses the cameras power and adds the geotag data to the EXIF information as the picture is taken, the device is quite small and uses the AUX data port on Nikon cameras, it can sit in the hot-shoe or clip to the camera strap:

I have been looking for something for Canon DSLR’s that achieved the same result. Canon seem to be in no rush to come up with something and all of the devices available require a lot of syncing and frankly messy work. I have also looked at the various apps available for my iPhone which of course has a full GPS built in. All of these require that the iPhone clock and the DSLR clock are set to the same time, this frankly seemed very clumsy to me.

Then I found gps4cam; this software does not require you to sync your camera’s and iPhone’s clocks. Instead, you take a picture of a QR code (on the iPhone’s display) at the end of the shoot. I’ll explain how to use it by discussing my picture taking and ingesting work flow.

For more, please visit his blog.

Thanks again Chris!

A few weeks ago the Wall Street Journal published a great article about iPhone apps and privacy. We think this is a major issue and we hope Apple finds a decent solution for this. Your iPhone knows more about you than you would imagine and you do want this information to remain private.

Concerning gps4cam you might wonder what we know about you, especially regarding the gps functionality. The answer is nothing! We are proud of this because we know other gps or geotag applications need to connect to a server to upload your personal information. We don’t. All the information is in the QR Code and you are the only owner of this. That’s also why you can use gps4cam without using any Internet connection: all is in the device.

We don’t believe that all the applications that upload your personal information do this to sell it to other companies but we know some of them do. Even if they don’t sell it, a mistake is very easily made and we all know there are a lot of crackers out there who would love to have a look at this kind of information. Isn’t it therefore reassuring to know that an application simply doesn’t connect to the internet and doesn’t upload all your data (passwords, contacts, locations…) to a server?

Our application is not expensive, but it isn’t free. That’s the way we make our money, we know we do it in a honest way and we are proud of it!
